FAQ's
What kind of sauna is this?
At Finnish Sauna Builders, we specialize in creating high-quality saunas that are tailored to our clients' needs and preferences. We understand that the sauna experience is a significant part of Finnish culture, and we strive to provide an authentic and traditional sauna experience to our clients.
One of the essential elements of a traditional sauna is the heater and stones. These components work together to create the heat and humidity that make the sauna experience so relaxing and rejuvenating. At Finnish Sauna Builders, we use only the highest quality heaters and stones to ensure that our saunas provide an optimal experience for our clients.
There are two ways to enjoy a traditional sauna: dry or wet. In a dry sauna, there is no added moisture, and the heat comes solely from the heater and stones. In contrast, a wet sauna involves tossing water onto the heated stones to create a refreshing burst of steam and added humidity. Both options have their benefits, and we can help you choose which one is best for you.
At Finnish Sauna Builders, we take pride in our attention to detail and commitment to quality. We use only the best materials and construction methods to ensure that our saunas are long-lasting and provide an optimal sauna experience.
Additionally, we offer a range of customization options to make your sauna uniquely yours, from the wood type to the lighting and seating arrangements.

How will it ship?
At Finnish Sauna Builders, we understand that shipping and delivery can be a concern for our clients. That is why we want to ensure that you are aware of our shipping and delivery process before making your purchase.
If you are purchasing one of our saunas, such as the Bridgeport sauna, it will ship via LTL (Less Than Truckload) truck. This means that your sauna will be securely packaged onto a single pallet and shipped directly to your curbside. It is important to note that LTL truck drivers are not responsible for unloading the pallet, so you will need to have the necessary equipment and manpower to unload it safely. You can always break apart the skid and hand offload the sauna if needed.
We want to make sure that your sauna arrives in perfect condition, which is why we take great care in packaging and securing it to the pallet. We also provide detailed instructions for unloading and unpacking your sauna, so you can do it safely and easily.
Once your sauna has arrived, we recommend inspecting the pallet and sauna carefully before signing off on the delivery. If there is any damage, please note it on the drop off slip. This will ensure that any potential damage or issues can be addressed promptly and efficiently.
At Finnish Sauna Builders, we want to make the shipping and delivery process as smooth and stress-free as possible. We are always available to answer any questions or concerns you may have, and we are committed to providing our clients with the best possible experience from start to finish.
If you are ready to order your sauna, or if you have any questions about our shipping and delivery process, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to working with you to create the perfect sauna for your needs, and we are confident that you will be thrilled with your purchase.
What maintenance is required?
At Finnish Sauna Builders, we believe that the traditional sauna experience should be stress-free and easy to maintain. That is why we design our saunas to require very little upkeep and maintenance.
After each use, we recommend wiping down the interior of your sauna with a damp cloth to remove any sweat or debris. This will help prevent any odors or bacteria from developing and keep your sauna clean and hygienic.
Additionally, we recommend checking for any dust or debris that you may have tracked into the sauna. This can easily be removed with a broom or vacuum, keeping your sauna looking its best.
For long-term care and maintenance, we recommend regularly inspecting your sauna for any signs of wear and tear. This includes checking the heater and stones for any damage or wear, as well as inspecting the wood for any cracks or splits. If you notice any issues, we recommend addressing them promptly to prevent any further damage.
For outdoor saunas we also recommend applying a high-quality sauna sealer or stain to your sauna every few years. This will help protect the wood from moisture and UV damage, ensuring that your sauna stays looking beautiful for years to come.
At Finnish Sauna Builders, we are committed to providing our clients with the best possible sauna experience, and that includes making maintenance and upkeep as easy as possible. If you have any questions about caring for your sauna or if you would like more information on long-term maintenance, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to help and provide guidance to ensure that your sauna stays in top condition for years to come.
Is this sauna hard to put together?
We want to make the assembly process for your sauna as easy and stress-free as possible. While some basic handyman skills are helpful, you do not need to be an expert to assemble our saunas.
To assemble your sauna, you will need a few basic tools, including a cordless drill. Additionally, we recommend having two people to help with the assembly process. This will help ensure that the assembly goes smoothly and efficiently.
In general, you can expect the assembly process to take six hours or less. This can vary depending on the size and complexity of your sauna, but we provide detailed assembly instructions to help make the process as easy as possible.

Sauna Basics
What is a traditional sauna?
A traditional sauna is a small room or space (barrel or cabin included) designed to produce dry heat, typically using electric heaters or even wood as a heat source. The heat is generated by a stove or heater that warms rocks or stones, which in turn radiate heat to the sauna's interior. Traditional saunas are typically made of wood, and the walls and ceiling are usually insulated to retain the heat. Barrel saunas and outdoor cabins often contain thick "staves" to insulate them properly.
How long does it take to heat up a traditional sauna?
The time it takes to heat up a traditional sauna can vary depending on the size of the sauna, proper ventilation, and the type of heater used. DO NOT FORGET YOUR VENTS, OR THE HEATER WILL SHUT OFF THINKING THE SAUNA IS HOTTER THAN IT IS. Generally, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to heat up a traditional sauna to the desired temperature.
What temperature should a traditional sauna be set at?
The ideal temperature for a traditional sauna is usually between 165°F and 190°F. However, the temperature can be adjusted based on individual preference and comfort level. It's important to note that saunas can reach temperatures as high as 200°F or more near the ceiling, and it's essential to stay hydrated and take breaks as needed. If you like more steam, set your heater to a lower temp and toss water on the rocks. Remember, not too much that it runs onto the floor under the heater.
How often should I use a traditional sauna?
The frequency of traditional sauna use can vary depending on individual health and wellness goals. For most people, using a traditional sauna once or twice a week is sufficient. Many studies show 3-4 times per week to be optimal. However, it's essential to listen to your body and take breaks as needed. As always, don't forget to talk with your doctor, they can make personalized recommendations for you.
Can traditional saunas be used for therapeutic purposes?
Yes, traditional saunas can be used for therapeutic purposes. Regular sauna use has been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, relaxation, stress relief, and pain relief. Additionally, saunas can help improve skin health and promote detoxification.
Sauna Construction
What type of wood is used to build traditional saunas?
The type of wood used to build traditional saunas can vary, but the most common types include cedar, Douglas Fir, hemlock, and spruce. Cedar is a popular choice due to its natural resistance to moisture and insects, while Douglas Fir, hemlock and spruce are also commonly used for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Fir is the way to go for prebuilt indoor and outdoor saunas that do not come in contact with constant rain. If moisture is an issue, always go cedar, rustic knotty or clear grade a will serve you well.
Can traditional saunas be used outdoors?
Yes, traditional saunas can be used outdoors. Outdoor saunas can provide a unique and enjoyable experience, and they are typically made of durable materials that can withstand the elements.
How do I maintain a traditional sauna?
Maintaining a traditional sauna involves several steps, including cleaning the sauna regularly, ensuring proper ventilation, and keeping the heater or stove clean and well-maintained. It's also essential to monitor the humidity level and temperature to ensure a comfortable and safe sauna experience.
For outdoor saunas, regular application of UV protectant is recommended. If you add a rain jacket this is minimized.
