Construction & Design

The Designer-B features a durable, splash-proof stainless-steel enclosure with all conducting parts protected against water exposure, and is safety-listed for permanent residential and light-commercial installations. The heater mounts to the wall via a heavy-duty steel wall bracket (hardware included) that also provides the required minimum 2-inch clearance from the wall behind the heater for safe airflow. The control knobs and electrical enclosure can be relocated — installers can remove the knobs, unsnap the plastic label plates, and reposition the terminal box to the front or either side panel before installation, giving flexibility to match bench layout and door swing. A painted trim piece conceals the wiring connections once installed.

Heating Elements & Rock Chamber

Correct rock loading is critical to performance: smaller rocks go in first around the outer perimeter of the heating chamber, all four sections (front, the two center sections between elements, and back) must be completely filled, rocks in the outer sections should be packed more tightly while the center sections are filled loosely to preserve airflow, and the tops of all elements must be loosely covered with 2–3 inches of rock. Rocks placed correctly between the front element and outer wall reduce nuisance cycling of the heater's high-limit control, while rocks under 2 inches should be discarded and replaced. A metal rock grate/guard is included and must be installed over the rock bed before use.

Controls & Timer

Built directly into the heater housing, the control panel includes a thermostat knob to adjust room temperature (turn clockwise to raise temperature, counter-clockwise to lower it) and a "9+1" timer dial. Turning the dial into the marked "1 hour operating zone" starts the heater immediately; turning it into the "1 to 9" zone lets bathers pre-set the heater to switch on automatically after a delay of up to 9 hours — ideal for waking up to, or arriving home to, a sauna that's already warm. Because the control is fully integrated, no separate SaunaLogic2 control or external contactor box is required for basic operation, simplifying installation and reducing total system cost. Safety Features

Every Designer-B heater includes a built-in high-limit control that automatically shuts the heater off if room temperature rises to an abnormal level; it is reset by letting the heater cool, turning the timer to zero, and pressing the reset button on the underside of the unit. The unit ships with two metal warning placards in the installation envelope — a CAUTION placard mounted on the interior wall directly above the heater, and a WARNING placard mounted on or beside the sauna door at eye level — both required by code. A wooden or metal heater guard rail is required around the unit, positioned per Finnleo's clearance diagram, to prevent bathers from accidentally touching the heater. The sauna door must open outward and use only magnetic catches, friction catches, or spring/gravity-loaded closures — never a permanent lock or latch. No shower or electrical receptacle may be installed inside the sauna room, and any light fixture must be positioned so it does not become a burn hazard. The contactor used with this heater must be rated for a minimum of 250,000 operating cycles.

Sizing, Room Construction & Electrical Specifications

The 4.5 kW model is engineered for sauna rooms with a minimum floor area of 12 sq. ft., a volume range of 100–210 cubic feet, and wall heights between 74" and 96". Per Finnleo's official heater specification chart, single-phase 208V installations require 21.6A service on 10-2 W/G copper wire, while 240V single-phase service draws 18.8A on 10-2 W/G wire (three-phase configurations use lighter 12-3 W/G wiring at lower amperage). All supply wiring must be copper rated for a minimum of 90°C, and the heater and controls must be grounded per NEC. Room construction must include a minimum of R-12 insulation in 16"-on-center 2x4 stud walls, foil vapor barrier, tongue-and-groove softwood interior paneling, and flooring at least 5/8" thick — never treat interior wood with stain, seal, or preservative. Ventilation is calculated using Finnleo's UL 875-based formula (fresh-air inlet below the heater, exhaust vent higher and farther away, sized per room floor area) to change the sauna's air roughly six times per hour. Expect a temperature gradient of 190°F near the ceiling above the heater down to about 85°F near the floor, with the opposite side of the room running 15–25°F cooler near the ceiling than the heater side.

Maintenance

Finnleo recommends inspecting the sauna room daily to confirm the heater and controls are switched off after use, and airing out the room by leaving the door and vents open between sessions. Weekly cleaning with soap or detergent and a scrub brush helps prevent perspiration stains from penetrating the softwood surfaces; badly soiled wood may require light sanding. Duckboards should be removed, scrubbed, and dried separately from the floor.
