Safety, Ventilation and Room Construction Requirements

Benches must never be installed directly over the heater. Sauna rooms should be built with a minimum of R-12 insulation in 16" on-center 2x4 stud walls, with a recommended minimum flooring thickness of 5/8". No electrical receptacles or showers may be installed inside the sauna room, and the sauna door must always open outward with no permanent locking mechanism. Proper ventilation requires a fresh-air inlet vent located directly below the heater and an air outlet positioned lower than the upper benches, as far from the heater as possible and roughly two feet higher than the inlet, sized per UL Specification 875 guidelines. Rocks must always fully cover the heating elements and should be placed loosely — smaller stones around the outer perimeter first, larger stones in the center — to allow proper air circulation; packing them too tightly can trip the high-limit safety switch. The heater should never be operated without rocks and the rock guard in place, and only the rock type supplied by Finnleo should be used, as substitutes may void the warranty.
